he EAGLE LECTERN, one of the more recent additions to the cathedral, was originally located in old Trinity Church, Janesville, Wisconsin, and dates from about 1918. In 1930, the present Trinity Church was built and the dark wooden lectern did not conform to the churchs new interior. It was then acquired by the Church of St. John the Divine, Burlington. Because of space restrictions, the lectern was placed in storage. Through the assistance of the diocesan office, the cathedral was able to purchase it. Hand carved of solid wood, the contrasting dark and golden oak symbolize the Old and New Testaments. The eagle is the symbol for Saint John the Evangelist and signifies the proclamation of the Word. This lectern replaced the Johnson Memorial Lectern, a massive brass eagle lectern dating from 1892, that was considered too protestant during the high church era of the 1940s. The eagle was removed and the base and column given to Christ Church, Whitefish Bay to use as a candle stand. |
