he Calvery Shrine is one of the most recent additions to the Cathedral. The carved wooden figures, the Corpus of Christ, flanked by St. Mary and St. John, were once part of the rood screen that separated the Nave from the Chancel. After the screen was dismantled, the figures were polychromed and placed on a platform high above the Chancel. During the renovations of the 1950's, they were removed and given to Camp Webb. In 2001 they were returned to the Cathedral, stripped of their paint and placed in their present location. The Corpus of Christ was carved in Switzerland of Alpine spruce and dates from 1885. The figures of St. Mary and St. John were carved in Germany in 1897 and are both of solid oak. |
